Which is harder to get into, UChicago or UPenn?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that both are in the same ultra-selective tier, but UPenn is usually seen as slightly harder to get into overall because it draws a very broad applicant pool across highly sought-after undergraduate programs like Wharton, nursing, engineering, and the College. UChicago is also extraordinarily selective, but its admissions process is often viewed as a bit more self-selecting because of its distinctive academic culture and unusual supplemental essays. In everyday admissions talk, most people would place both in the “reach for almost everyone” category rather than treating one as clearly easier.

Part of the confusion is that year-to-year numbers can shift, and both schools use early rounds in ways that affect how selective they look from the outside. UChicago has long had a reputation for attracting applicants who are especially comfortable with intense academics and quirky, highly specific essay prompts, while Penn benefits from enormous name recognition and interest from students across many different academic and preprofessional paths.

So if you want the simple comparison people usually make, it is this: UPenn is more often perceived as the tougher admit overall, but not by a dramatic margin that should change how you build your list. In practical terms, you should treat both as top-level reaches.
