Is UChicago or Columbia better for computer science undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between UChicago and Columbia and want to focus on computer science. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to be the better fit for an undergrad CS student in terms of academics and opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is curriculum and environment: Columbia gives you a more traditional engineering-based CS experience in New York City, while UChicago offers a more theory-friendly CS path in a quieter campus setting with a strong Core. For an undergraduate who wants easy access to tech internships during the school year, proximity to startups, and an engineering school structure, Columbia usually has the edge. The tradeoff is that it is not as naturally embedded in a large engineering culture as Columbia.

Academically, both will challenge you. Columbia may feel more straightforward for a student who wants the classic undergrad CS-and-engineering path. UChicago may feel better for a student who wants CS inside a broader intellectual framework and does not mind the Core taking up meaningful space.

If the question is strictly which school is better for most undergrad CS students, I would give Columbia a slight advantage because of its engineering setup, New York access, and day-to-day industry opportunities. I would pick UChicago over Columbia only if you are genuinely drawn to its academic style, Core curriculum, and more theory-oriented atmosphere, because those are meaningful differences, not small ones.
