Is UChicago or Columbia better for computer science undergrad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is curriculum and environment: Columbia gives you a more traditional engineering-based CS experience in New York City, while UChicago offers a more theory-friendly CS path in a quieter campus setting with a strong Core. For an undergraduate who wants easy access to tech internships during the school year, proximity to startups, and an engineering school structure, Columbia usually has the edge. For someone who likes math-heavy thinking, close faculty interaction, and a campus culture that leans more intellectual than preprofessional, UChicago can be especially appealing.

At Columbia, CS sits within a well-established engineering ecosystem through SEAS, which tends to matter for undergrads who want hardware-adjacent work, applied systems, engineering clubs, and recruiting that feels plugged into a major city. Being in NYC also helps with semester internships, networking, and industry events without needing to wait for the summer. The pace can feel more career-driven, and that is a real advantage if you already know you want to build experience quickly.

UChicago’s CS department has grown a lot and is well respected, especially for students who enjoy the more conceptual side of computing. The department benefits from the university’s broader strengths in mathematics, statistics, economics, and rigorous interdisciplinary work, which can be a great combination for AI, theory, quantitative computing, or research-oriented students. The tradeoff is that it is not as naturally embedded in a large engineering culture as Columbia.

Academically, both will challenge you. Columbia may feel more straightforward for a student who wants the classic undergrad CS-and-engineering path. UChicago may feel better for a student who wants CS inside a broader intellectual framework and does not mind the Core taking up meaningful space.

If the question is strictly which school is better for most undergrad CS students, I would give Columbia a slight advantage because of its engineering setup, New York access, and day-to-day industry opportunities. I would pick UChicago over Columbia only if you are genuinely drawn to its academic style, Core curriculum, and more theory-oriented atmosphere, because those are meaningful differences, not small ones.
