Is Wellesley or Barnard harder to get into overall?

Barnard is usually viewed as a bit harder to get into overall. It draws a very large applicant pool because of its location in New York City and its formal connection to Columbia, and that combination tends to make admissions especially competitive. Wellesley is also highly selective, but in broad admissions conversations Barnard is more often seen as having the slight edge in difficulty.

One concrete difference is the way applicants read the academic ecosystem. Barnard students take classes at Columbia, use Columbia resources, and are part of a larger university setting while still attending a women’s college. That cross-registration and access to the wider Columbia community give Barnard an added layer of appeal that attracts many students who want both a small college identity and an Ivy-adjacent experience.

Another differentiator is geography and applicant demand. Barnard’s Manhattan location has enormous pull for students interested in internships, media, finance, arts, policy, and city life during the school year. Wellesley has outstanding academics and a powerful network, especially through its consortium access and Boston-area opportunities, but Barnard’s urban setting tends to create slightly more intense application pressure.

Wellesley is not meaningfully easier in the casual sense, though. Both schools are reaches for most applicants, and both attract very strong students with top grades, rigorous coursework, and distinctive extracurricular profiles. The clearest broad takeaway is that Barnard is typically perceived as the tougher admit, while Wellesley remains in the same highly selective tier.
