The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity and network: Santa Clara sits in the middle of Silicon Valley and has much more day-to-day access to tech employers, while UNH can still lead to tech careers but does not offer the same built-in recruiting ecosystem for that region. At Santa Clara, local internships during the school year are far more realistic, and the alumni base is deeply concentrated in Bay Area tech. That matters because a lot of Silicon Valley hiring happens through repeated campus recruiting, referral networks, and students already working part-time or interning nearby.

For Silicon Valley job opportunities specifically, Santa Clara has the clearer advantage. Its location in Santa Clara, close ties to Bay Area companies, and strong regional brand make it easier to build connections with recruiters and alumni who already work in tech. Students there benefit not just from official recruiting, but from being able to attend company events, network in person, and pursue internships without needing to relocate across the country.

UNH can absolutely place students into tech roles, especially if you perform well, build experience, and recruit nationally. But its alumni network is strongest in New England, and it does not carry the same immediate name recognition or employer access in Silicon Valley. If your goal is specifically that region, you would likely need to be more proactive about summer internships, LinkedIn outreach, and national application cycles.

Reputation also works differently between the two. In New Hampshire and the broader Northeast, UNH has solid recognition. In Silicon Valley, Santa Clara is much more familiar to employers, especially for business, engineering, and adjacent tech fields, because they see its students and graduates regularly.

So if Silicon Valley access is one of your biggest priorities, Santa Clara is the more effective launch point. UNH can still get you there, but Santa Clara gives you a much shorter path and a much denser local network for internships and full-time tech recruiting.
