Is Carnegie Mellon or Yale better for supplemental essays?

I’m applying to both Carnegie Mellon and Yale and trying to figure out how to approach their supplemental essays. I know both schools care a lot about fit, but I’m not sure which one tends to be more focused on specific academic interests versus personal voice and overall story.

I want to make sure I’m spending my time on the right kind of writing for each school without overcomplicating the process.

Yale gives you more room for personal voice, while Carnegie Mellon rewards sharper academic and program-specific writing. Yale’s short responses and longer supplements are designed to reveal how you think, what you value, and how you engage with community, whereas CMU’s prompts usually work best when they show clear intellectual direction and a concrete understanding of the school’s offerings.

At Yale, the strongest supplements usually sound vivid, reflective, and distinctly human. The admissions office uses multiple short-answer questions to get at personality, curiosity, humor, and perspective, so writing that feels flatly strategic can underperform there. Even when Yale asks about academic interests, it still helps to connect those interests to the way you think, the questions you ask, or the communities you want to join.

For Yale, spend more effort on making the writing sound like you and on choosing details that reveal character and thoughtfulness. For CMU, spend more effort on research and on building a clean link between your past experiences, your intended field, and what Carnegie Mellon specifically offers.

The safest approach is not to build two totally different personas, but to shift emphasis. Yale wants to hear your voice first and your fit through that voice; CMU wants to see your fit first, supported by a credible and focused story.
