Is Carnegie Mellon or Yale harder to get into?

Yale is harder to get into overall. Carnegie Mellon is also extremely selective, but its level of difficulty varies much more by school and major.

One big difference is how admissions are structured. At Carnegie Mellon, applying to programs like computer science, drama, or some engineering areas can be exceptionally difficult, sometimes feeling as hard as anywhere in the country for those specific fields. Other CMU colleges are still very competitive, but not uniformly at the same level. Yale, by contrast, has a more consistently intense admissions bar across majors because students are admitted to the university rather than into narrowly separated undergraduate programs in the same way.

Another differentiator is the kind of institution each one is. Yale’s combination of Ivy-level prestige, broad liberal arts strength, residential college system, and well-known name across disciplines draws huge numbers of applicants who may not be targeting one specific major. Carnegie Mellon attracts a very strong but somewhat more self-selecting pool, especially from students focused on tech, engineering, arts, business, or design.

So for a general college list question, Yale should be treated as the tougher admit overall. The main exception is that a few Carnegie Mellon programs, especially School of Computer Science and some arts programs, can be just as difficult or even tougher in practice than Yale for applicants targeting those exact areas.
