Northwestern offers the fuller overall undergraduate experience for most students, because it combines a highly residential campus, broad academic and extracurricular options, and unusually easy access to a major city without feeling like an urban commuter school. Its quarter system also creates a fast-moving, energetic rhythm, and the campus culture tends to be socially active in a way many students find engaging over four years.

One big difference is academic range. Northwestern gives undergraduates access to more disciplines, more chances to combine interests across schools, and more research, performance, media, and professional opportunities during the school year. Middlebury is excellent academically, especially in the liberal arts and languages, but it is narrower by design, so students who want to explore widely often feel more boxed in.

The social environment also feels quite different. Middlebury is more intimate, more outdoors-oriented, and more campus-contained, which can be warm and close-knit but also a little insular for some students after a while.
