Notre Dame centers a lot of student life around dorm communities, school traditions, and campus events, while Columbia gives you direct access to internships, research connections, and cultural opportunities in Manhattan. Academically, both are excellent, but the feel of everyday life at each school is very different, and that usually ends up mattering more than people expect.

For campus experience, Notre Dame is much more self-contained. Students often describe it as community-heavy, spirited, and rooted in shared traditions, with a classic college-town rhythm. Columbia is far more integrated into the city, so your social life, internships, and even downtime can extend well beyond campus. That can feel exciting and energizing, but also less contained and less uniform.

On academics, Columbia is especially appealing if you want an intense intellectual environment with broad access to major research, media, finance, policy, and arts opportunities. Its Core Curriculum is a defining feature, so you should actually like the idea of a structured shared academic foundation. Notre Dame is also academically strong across many fields and tends to stand out for undergraduate teaching, a cohesive student culture, and a strong emphasis on ethics, service, and formation alongside academics.

Student life differs in tone too. Notre Dame has a more unified social scene because so much happens on campus, and the residential hall system plays a major role. Columbia’s student life can be more decentralized, with students building very different versions of college depending on how much they plug into campus versus the city.

A simple way to decide is to picture an ordinary Tuesday, not the brochure version. If the idea of walking through a classic campus, knowing people through residence traditions, and having a more collectively shared college experience feels right, Notre Dame has a real advantage. If you want your college years to be shaped by the intensity and opportunity of New York, and you are excited by a more independent rhythm, Columbia is probably the better match.
