How does campus culture at the University of Maryland compare to Boston College?

I'm trying to get a better sense of what each school feels like beyond the basic stats. I know both are big names, but they seem to have pretty different vibes and student experiences.

I'm mainly wondering how the campus culture compares in terms of social life, school spirit, and whether students tend to feel more collaborative or more competitive.

They do feel quite different. University of Maryland tends to have a bigger, more public-university energy: more visible school spirit around Big Ten sports, a wider range of student personalities, and a campus social scene that feels busier and less contained. Boston College usually feels smaller, more residential, and more cohesive, with strong traditions, a polished campus culture, and a student body that often comes across as more pre-professional and community-oriented.

At Maryland, the social atmosphere is typically lively and varied because the school is large and draws students from many different backgrounds and interests. You will find plenty of school pride, especially around basketball and football, and that spirit can be a real part of daily campus life. The size also means there is no single dominant social scene, which some students love because it gives them room to find their niche, while others experience it as less intimate.

Boston College tends to feel more self-contained. Because more students are centered around campus life, the culture can come across as tighter-knit and more consistent from student to student. Social life is active, but it is often described as more campus-based and tradition-driven than Maryland's. BC also has a noticeable Jesuit influence in the sense that service, reflection, and community values are more visible parts of student life, even for students who are not especially religious.

In terms of collaboration versus competition, Maryland often feels more mixed simply because of its scale. There are ambitious students, especially in popular majors, but the overall vibe is usually not defined by cutthroat competition. Boston College can feel more outwardly polished and career-conscious, which sometimes reads as more pressure-heavy, though many students also describe classmates as supportive and loyal.
