Which is better for internship opportunities: University of Michigan or NYU?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a career perspective, especially for finding internships while I’m in college. Both seem strong, but they’re in very different places and I keep hearing that location and alumni networks can matter a lot.

I’m mostly interested in which school gives students an easier path to internship opportunities and recruiting in general.

For internship access during the school year, NYU usually has the more convenient setup. Being in New York City means students can reach part-time internships during the semester in finance, media, tech, fashion, nonprofits, and startups without needing to wait for summer, and many employers recruit there because they are already nearby. Michigan is also excellent for recruiting, but its biggest advantage is not day-to-day proximity. It is the scale and loyalty of its alumni network, plus strong on-campus recruiting for fields like business, engineering, consulting, and tech.

NYU tends to fit students who want their college experience tightly connected to a major job market from the start. If you like the idea of networking constantly, attending employer events in the city, and building experience through semester internships, NYU gives a very direct path. That matters a lot in industries where relationships and repeated exposure help, especially finance, entertainment, media, luxury, and some parts of tech.

Michigan makes a lot of sense for students who want a more traditional campus environment but still want serious career outcomes. Employers know Michigan well, and the university has a strong reputation with large firms that hire in structured pipelines. Ross, engineering, computer science, and other programs feed into major internship recruiting cycles very effectively, and the alumni base is famously active in helping students open doors.

From a pure ease-of-access perspective, NYU often wins because internships can be built into the semester much more naturally. From a broader recruiting perspective, especially if you value campus community, school spirit, and a very powerful alumni network that reaches across industries and cities, Michigan is every bit as compelling.
