How do Carnegie Mellon and Duke compare for college admission selectivity?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Duke is the tougher admit overall across the university, while Carnegie Mellon’s selectivity varies more sharply by school and major. Both belong in reach territory for most applicants, but Duke is usually viewed as more uniformly hard to get into. Carnegie Mellon can be just as difficult, or even tougher, in certain areas like computer science, engineering, drama, or design, while some other programs are a bit less extreme.

For building a college list, it helps to think of Duke as a broad high-reach and Carnegie Mellon as a school where the level of reach depends heavily on what you are applying for. Duke’s admissions process is highly selective no matter your intended field, and it attracts a very large pool of top academic applicants across disciplines. Carnegie Mellon is also very selective, but it is more program-driven, so the School of Computer Science is a very different admissions landscape from, say, Dietrich or some business-related paths.

That means the comparison is not perfectly one-to-one. A student applying to Duke and Carnegie Mellon computer science may find CMU at least as hard, and possibly harder, in practical terms. A student applying to Duke and a less selective CMU division may experience Duke as the steeper climb.

For a junior building a list, the safest way to classify them is as reaches, with extra caution around the most competitive Carnegie Mellon majors.
