Is the University of Michigan or the University of British Columbia better for international students?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing both of these schools recommended for international students. I’m mainly looking at overall student support, campus environment, and how easy it is to adjust as someone coming from another country.

I know “better” can depend on what a student values, so I’m trying to compare them in a general way before I apply.

For international students in a broad, day-to-day sense, UBC often feels easier to settle into, while the University of Michigan can offer a more traditional U.S. campus experience with very strong resources but a steeper adjustment in some areas. UBC has a large international student population, a globally oriented campus culture, and Vancouver itself is one of the more international cities in North America. Michigan also has substantial support for international students, but Ann Arbor is a smaller college town, so the experience can feel more centered on campus life than on the surrounding city.

UBC tends to suit students who want an environment where being from another country does not feel unusual. International students are a very visible part of campus, and Vancouver’s diversity can make everyday adjustment easier, from food and transit to finding cultural communities. The campus is beautiful and self-contained, but because it is somewhat separate from downtown, student life can feel less centered on one unified college-town culture and more spread between campus and city.

Michigan is a strong match for students who want the classic residential university atmosphere with high school spirit, major athletics, and a very active student community. Ann Arbor is known for being welcoming, intellectually engaged, and student-friendly, so many international students do build community quickly there. At the same time, the adjustment to U.S. campus culture, weather, and a less globally mixed local environment than Vancouver can be more noticeable.

On support, both universities have established international student offices and orientation programming. UBC often stands out for the sheer normalcy of international life on campus, while Michigan stands out for the intensity of student involvement and institutional resources at a large U.S. public university. If your priority is feeling internationally embedded from the start, UBC has an edge. If your priority is a spirited campus community with a distinctly American university experience, Michigan may be more appealing.
