Is Georgetown worth the extra cost compared with Northwestern for undergrad?

Probably not, unless Georgetown offers something very specific that Northwestern does not for your goals. For most undergraduates, Northwestern is at least as strong academically, offers broader options across majors, and carries excellent national recognition, so paying significantly more for Georgetown is hard to justify on value alone. Georgetown can be worth the premium mainly for students who know they want its particular strengths, especially government, international relations, policy, and a Washington-centered college experience.

Georgetown makes the most sense for a student who wants to be immersed in politics, diplomacy, public service, or policy from day one. Its location in D.C. is not just a branding point; it shapes internships during the school year, access to think tanks, embassies, nonprofits, Capitol Hill, and a student culture that is very engaged with public affairs. If you are aiming at fields where those networks matter early and directly, Georgetown’s environment can feel unusually aligned.

Northwestern fits the student who wants equal top-tier strength but more academic flexibility and less pressure to pay extra for a narrow advantage. It is especially appealing if you are still exploring, interested in combining fields, or drawn to areas like journalism, engineering, theater, economics, or the sciences alongside social sciences and humanities. It also tends to offer a more traditional residential campus experience, while still giving you strong access to major-city opportunities through Chicago.

Georgetown is a terrific school, but it does not have such a universal undergraduate edge over Northwestern that a large cost difference automatically makes sense. Unless Georgetown’s D.C.-based ecosystem is central to what you want to study and how you want to spend your college years, Northwestern is likely the more sensible investment.
