How does MIT admissions difficulty compare to Rice University for applicants?

I'm trying to get a realistic sense of how selective these two schools are for a college list I’m making. Both seem really strong in STEM, and I keep seeing people mention that they’re hard to get into.

I’m not looking for current acceptance rates, just a general comparison of how difficult MIT and Rice are to get admitted to overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that MIT sits in a different tier of selectivity, while Rice is still very hard to get into but a bit more attainable for a wider range of top applicants. MIT draws an unusually concentrated pool of students with exceptional math, science, and technical accomplishment, so even applicants with near-perfect grades and scores are far from safe there. Rice is also highly selective and attracts many outstanding STEM applicants, but it is not usually viewed as quite as brutally difficult overall as MIT.

For a college list, that means MIT should be treated as an extreme reach for essentially everyone. Its applicant pool is packed with students who not only have top academics, but also serious distinction in research, Olympiads, engineering projects, computing, or other unusually strong achievements. Rice evaluates applicants holistically too, and it absolutely rejects many very qualified students, but the bar is not perceived as being as singularly intense as MIT’s.

Another difference is institutional emphasis. MIT has a very specific academic identity and tends to appeal to students with a strong, credible fit for a deeply technical environment. Rice is also excellent in STEM, but its admissions process often feels somewhat broader in what a compelling applicant can look like, especially across academic interests, personal qualities, and campus fit.

So in plain terms: both are hard, but MIT is harder by a noticeable margin. If you are building a realistic list, Rice belongs in the highly selective reach category, while MIT should be placed in the most unpredictable, highest-reach bucket regardless of how strong your profile is.
