Pepperdine or NYU for internships: which school has better access to internship opportunities?

For internship access alone, NYU usually offers more built-in opportunity during the school year because of its location in New York City and how closely many students’ schedules are tied to part-time internships. Being in Manhattan makes it much easier to reach companies in finance, media, tech, fashion, nonprofits, arts, and public service without needing a car, and NYU students often intern while classes are in session. Pepperdine does offer strong opportunities too, but they tend to depend more on your industry, transportation, and how actively you build connections beyond campus.

NYU is the stronger environment for a student who wants internship access to feel constant and immediate. The city itself functions like an extension of campus, so students can network, attend employer events, and interview during the semester with less logistical friction. That matters a lot if you want to try multiple internships before senior year or explore fields where proximity is everything, especially entertainment business, publishing, finance, marketing, politics, or startup work.

Pepperdine makes more sense for a student who wants a traditional campus experience first and internship access second, especially if they are looking at industries tied to Southern California. Malibu is beautiful, but it is not a walk-out-the-door internship setting in the same way Manhattan is. For Los Angeles-area opportunities, especially in entertainment, business, communications, and some nonprofit spaces, Pepperdine students can do very well, but commuting and transportation are much more relevant. In practice, that can make in-semester internships less seamless than at NYU.

For summer internships, the gap narrows somewhat because students at both schools can go elsewhere for the summer. Pepperdine students can tap into the broader LA market, and NYU students still benefit from a huge local network. But during the academic year, NYU usually has the clearer edge simply because students are already placed in one of the country’s densest internship markets.

One other factor is pace and culture. NYU tends to reward students who are independent, proactive, and comfortable navigating a fast-moving city. Pepperdine can be excellent for a student who wants more faculty connection and a smaller-campus feel, then uses that support to pursue targeted internships rather than constant year-round ones.
