Should I choose Pepperdine or Santa Clara for college?

Pepperdine and Santa Clara can both be excellent choices, but they attract somewhat different students. Pepperdine tends to appeal more to someone who wants a smaller, scenic, residential experience with a strong Christian identity and a quieter, more traditional campus culture. Santa Clara usually fits a student who wants a polished campus and a student environment that feels a bit more professionally oriented.

A student who cares a lot about day-to-day atmosphere may notice the biggest difference first. Pepperdine’s Malibu setting is beautiful and distinctive, but it is also more isolated, so campus life matters a lot and getting off campus often takes planning. Santa Clara sits in the middle of the Bay Area economy, so even though it has a contained campus, students are much more plugged into off-campus opportunities.

For academics, Santa Clara often stands out most for business, engineering, and tech-adjacent paths. It tends to suit students who already imagine themselves pursuing internships during the school year or building toward careers in finance, consulting, product, or engineering. Pepperdine can be very appealing for students interested in fields like business, communications, psychology, international studies, or pre-law, especially if they value close faculty attention and a liberal arts feel.

Student experience also depends on what kind of social culture feels comfortable. Pepperdine has a more visibly faith-influenced environment, and that shapes parts of student life even though the student body is not monolithic. Santa Clara is also Jesuit, but many students experience it as less overtly religious in daily campus culture and more centered on balance between academics, social life, and career preparation.

If you are drawn to a campus that feels self-contained, visually stunning, and somewhat more intimate, Pepperdine often makes more sense. If you want your college years tied closely to internships and the energy of Silicon Valley while still having a traditional campus, Santa Clara is often the one students end up feeling gave them more options.
