It is especially attractive if you like the idea of professors being accessible, classmates who are highly engaged, and a college town atmosphere in Williamsburg that is quieter and more contained.

Delaware is often the better home for a student who wants more room to explore. It has a wider large-university feel, more visible school spirit, more varied campus life, and the kind of flexibility that comes with a broader menu of majors, student organizations, and social scenes. Newark is also more active as a college town in an everyday sense, and Delaware can feel less intense socially and academically than William & Mary, even while still offering strong programs.

If your uncertainty is really about academics, think about how you learn. A student who wants close reading, class discussion, and a more intimate academic culture often ends up happier at William & Mary. A student who wants strong academics but also likes having more scale, more options, and a little more space to define their own experience often feels more comfortable at Delaware.

One practical factor matters a lot here: cost. If Delaware is significantly cheaper, that can be a very strong reason to choose it, especially since both schools are well respected. If the prices are close and you are drawn to a smaller, more intense academic setting, William & Mary is the one people usually choose for that experience.
