Is UC Davis or Columbia a better value for college if I care about return on investment?

I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly from a value standpoint, not just prestige. I know Columbia is a lot more expensive, but I’m wondering whether the name recognition and outcomes make up for that in the long run.

I’m a high school senior trying to make a practical decision and I want to understand which one tends to be the better financial value overall.

For pure return on investment, the answer often depends on your price after aid, but for many students UC Davis is the better financial value if you would pay close to full price at Columbia. Davis has a much lower cost of attendance, especially for California residents, and it offers strong outcomes in engineering, biological sciences, agriculture, environmental fields, pre-med pathways, and many public-sector or research-oriented careers. If Columbia gives you substantial need-based aid, though, the calculation can flip quickly because its brand strength, recruiting access, and alumni network are unusually powerful.

UC Davis makes the most sense for the student who wants a practical degree with manageable debt and is comfortable building opportunities through internships, research, and campus involvement rather than relying on school name alone. It is especially compelling for in-state students because the tuition gap is so large, and Davis has real academic depth rather than being just the cheaper option. For majors with more standardized career paths, like nursing-adjacent health tracks, engineering, computer science, statistics, or many life sciences routes, Davis can produce an excellent payoff relative to cost.

Columbia fits the student whose total cost is brought down significantly by financial aid or whose goals are tied to fields where elite-school access can matter more early on. Finance, consulting, certain tech recruiting channels, top national fellowships, and some highly selective graduate or professional trajectories can all benefit from Columbia’s location in New York City and its employer visibility. The upside is real, but it is hardest to justify if paying full freight would mean taking on very large loans.

The key practical question is not whether Columbia has stronger name recognition, because it does, but whether that advantage is worth the extra cost in your specific case. If Columbia would leave you with little or moderate debt, its long-term value can be excellent. If the choice is full-price Columbia versus much lower-cost UC Davis, Davis is often the smarter ROI decision because avoiding heavy debt usually outweighs prestige gains.
