The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus ease of navigating opportunities. UCLA gives you much stronger access to in-school-year internships because it sits in Los Angeles, where entertainment, media, tech, startups, healthcare, consulting, and nonprofit organizations are all nearby. UC Davis has solid support and strong outcomes too, but many internships are more likely to be summer-based, research-based, or tied to Sacramento, the Bay Area, agriculture, biotech, government, and health-related fields rather than a huge concentration right next to campus.

For sheer volume and convenience during the academic year, UCLA usually has the edge. Being in LA makes it more realistic to intern part time while taking classes, especially if you are in fields like film, business-adjacent work, communications, public affairs, design, pre-health, or tech roles with local companies. The alumni network is also especially visible in Southern California, which matters for referrals and informal connections.

UC Davis is not weak on internships, but the experience can feel more self-directed and field-specific. Davis students benefit from strong career services, faculty connections, research opportunities, and proximity to Sacramento for policy, government, and some healthcare and nonprofit work. It can be excellent for students interested in environmental work, agriculture, veterinary and animal-related paths, biological sciences, and certain engineering or public service routes.

A practical point that often gets overlooked is transportation and time. At UCLA, opportunities are nearby, but LA traffic can make even a local internship a real time commitment. At Davis, the college-town setup is easier day to day, but you may need to be more intentional about traveling for internships or concentrating them in the summer.

If internship access is your top priority across the broadest range of industries, UCLA is the safer bet. UC Davis becomes very compelling when your interests line up with its strongest ecosystems, especially research, life sciences, agriculture, environmental fields, and Sacramento-connected opportunities.
