Is UC Davis or UC Berkeley better for pre-vet?

UC Davis is usually the more natural fit for a student who is already fairly sure about pre-vet. Davis has one of the country’s best-known veterinary ecosystems, including the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, a highly developed Animal Science program, and easier day-to-day access to animal-focused coursework, research, and clinical settings. If your goal is the strongest direct preparation for vet school, Davis stands out because the path is built into the campus in a very visible way.

A student who wants hands-on animal experience early often fits Davis well. You can find classes, clubs, faculty, and internships centered on livestock, companion animals, equine work, wildlife, and veterinary medicine itself, which matters because vet school applicants need more than strong grades, they also need sustained animal and veterinary exposure. Being at a campus where those opportunities are abundant can make it easier to build a coherent pre-vet profile.

Berkeley makes more sense for a student who wants to keep pre-vet open while also wanting a broader academic identity outside animal science. Berkeley is excellent in biology and related sciences, and a highly self-directed student can absolutely prepare well for vet school there. But the route is less pre-structured around veterinary medicine, so you may need to work harder to piece together animal experience, vet shadowing, and specialized advising off campus or through independent searching.

Berkeley can be especially appealing if you are equally excited by fields like molecular biology, public health, environmental science, or research-heavy science training and want maximum flexibility in case your plans shift. Davis is the place that more clearly says, from the moment you arrive, that veterinary medicine is a common and supported destination.

For a student focused specifically on becoming a veterinarian, I would lean toward UC Davis. For a student who wants elite science training but is less certain about vet school and wants a wider range of academic directions, Berkeley can still be a very strong choice.
