Boston University vs UMass Amherst for city life: which feels more urban?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Boston University and UMass Amherst, and city life is a big factor for me. I want to be somewhere that feels walkable, active, and connected to a real city environment.

I’m mainly trying to figure out which school actually gives more of that urban experience in day-to-day college life.

Boston University feels much more urban in day-to-day life. Its campus runs along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, with city blocks, apartment buildings, restaurants, shops, and public transit woven directly into where students live and go to class. You are not stepping out of campus into a college town version of city life. You are already in the city.

The biggest difference is physical setting. BU does not have a traditional enclosed campus, so your routine includes walking city sidewalks, using the Green Line, and being surrounded by Boston neighborhoods like Back Bay, Fenway, and Allston. That creates a constant sense of movement and connection to the broader city, not just student life.

UMass Amherst is far more campus-centered. Amherst is a classic college town, and while the area has places to eat, shops, and the Five College Consortium nearby, it does not feel like living inside a major city. Most of your day will still revolve around a large standalone campus rather than an urban street grid integrated with the school.

Transit and access also separate them. At BU, public transportation is part of everyday life, and it is easy to get to internships, museums, neighborhoods, and events without needing a car. At UMass, getting around is manageable through campus and regional buses, but the experience is more self-contained and much less like living in a dense urban environment.

If what you want is walkable, active, and unmistakably city-based, BU is the one that delivers that atmosphere much more clearly.
