The University of Michigan is tied to a major academic medical center, supports a huge range of labs across biology, public health, engineering, and neuroscience, and gives you multiple ways to build a medical school application. BU is also very solid for pre-med, especially because of its urban clinical environment, but Michigan is usually the more advantageous platform.

One important differentiator is the scale and depth of academic and research opportunities. Michigan’s size can be a real benefit here: there are far more departments, labs, and interdisciplinary programs feeding into pre-med interests, including public health, biomedical engineering, psychology, and health policy. That matters because medical school applicants often stand out by developing a specific academic angle, and Michigan makes that easier to do without running out of options.

Another factor is clinical and institutional access. Michigan’s medical campus and hospital system are deeply integrated into the university environment, which helps create a strong pipeline for shadowing, volunteering, and medically related research. BU has excellent access to Boston hospitals too, but those opportunities can feel more distributed across the city and sometimes require more self-navigation.
