Rice vs WashU for internships: which school has stronger internship opportunities and recruiting access?

I’m trying to compare Rice and WashU and care a lot about internship opportunities, especially how easy it is to get access to recruiting, alumni, and summer positions. I know both are strong schools, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one gives students a better path to internships in general.

I’m mostly looking for a broad comparison of internship access and support, not a specific major or career field.

Rice has the edge for internships in broad, practical terms because Houston gives students unusually direct access to major employers during the school year, and Rice students benefit from a tight alumni network in a city with strong industries like energy, healthcare, engineering, consulting, and finance. That matters because internship access is not just about prestige. It is also about how many employers are nearby, how easy it is to meet alumni, and whether part-time or semester internships are realistic without leaving campus.

Houston is one of Rice’s biggest advantages. The Texas Medical Center, large energy firms, engineering companies, startups, and a substantial business presence are all close enough to create steady pipelines for internships, research roles, and networking events. For many students, that makes recruiting feel less remote and more embedded into the academic year, not just something that happens in the summer.

Rice also tends to benefit from a very engaged and responsive alumni culture. Because the undergraduate population is relatively small, students often find it easier to build direct relationships with professors, career staff, and alumni contacts who can open doors. In internship searches, that kind of access can matter just as much as the school’s name.

WashU is still excellent, and its career support is strong, especially for students aiming at pre-health, business-related paths, research, or certain graduate-school-oriented trajectories. WashU students absolutely land strong internships, including in major national markets, but that path can depend a bit more on structured recruiting cycles, summer relocation, and individual outreach beyond the immediate local ecosystem.

So if the question is which school makes internship access feel more abundant and geographically convenient across many fields, Rice comes out ahead.
