The biggest day-to-day tradeoff is that Maryland tends to feel more like one unified, high-energy residential campus, while Rutgers feels bigger, more spread out, and more dependent on which campus and friend group you land in. At Maryland, a lot of student life is concentrated in College Park around one main campus, Big Ten sports, and a strong school-spirit culture. At Rutgers New Brunswick, student life is active too, but it is split across multiple campuses connected by buses, so the experience can feel less centralized and a little more self-directed.

Maryland usually comes across as the more immediately cohesive and traditional college environment. There is a lively social scene, lots of students on or near campus, strong basketball culture, and a campus layout that makes it easier to run into people and feel part of a shared atmosphere.
