Is UT Austin or Notre Dame better for pre-med?

I’m trying to choose between UT Austin and Notre Dame and I’m interested in pre-med. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one may be the better fit for pre-med students in terms of classes, advising, research, and getting into med school. I’m a junior trying to narrow down my college list.

Both can work well for pre-med, but they suit different kinds of students. UT Austin makes more sense for someone who wants a very large university with broad science options, major research activity, and access to a major medical hub in Austin and nearby Texas health systems. Notre Dame tends to appeal more to students who want a smaller undergraduate environment, closer advising, and a campus culture where teaching and mentorship are often easier to access early.

At UT Austin, the biggest advantage is scale. There are extensive biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and public health-related opportunities, plus a huge research ecosystem. For a student who is proactive, comfortable navigating a large campus, and excited by having many labs, hospitals, and student organizations to choose from, UT can open a lot of doors. The tradeoff is that intro science classes can feel big and competitive, so you need to be organized about seeking faculty relationships, office hours, and clinical experiences.

Notre Dame is attractive for a student who wants more structure around the pre-med path. Its advising reputation is strong, and many students find it easier to build relationships with professors because the undergraduate focus is more central to the school’s identity. That can matter for recommendation letters, mentoring, and staying on track with prerequisites. If you value a close-knit campus and want support without having to hunt for it quite as aggressively, Notre Dame has an edge.

On medical school outcomes, both schools place students into med school, but the experience getting there may feel different. UT can be excellent for an independent, self-directed student who wants to take advantage of a major public research university. Notre Dame often fits the student who wants a more guided and personal undergraduate experience while still having strong academics and research access.

For pre-med specifically, I would lean Notre Dame if your priority is advising, professor access, and a more manageable undergraduate environment. I would lean UT Austin if your priority is scale, research breadth, and the opportunities that come with a large flagship in a major state system.
