Is Duke or Dartmouth generally more difficult to get into?

The biggest practical difference is not a dependable gap in difficulty, but the kind of applicant each school may attract: Duke’s larger university setting and broad preprofessional, research, and STEM appeal can create a different applicant pool from Dartmouth’s smaller, undergraduate-centered liberal arts environment. Both receive applications from students with excellent grades, rigorous coursework, strong activities, and compelling recommendations. Neither is a school that should be treated as a target simply because an applicant looks academically qualified.

It is reasonable to view Duke and Dartmouth as being in essentially the same admissions tier. Year-to-year published rates can shift with application volume, class size, and institutional priorities, but those changes do not make one predictably easier for an individual applicant. Early application plans can also change the apparent numbers, since applicants in those pools are not interchangeable with regular-decision applicants and may include students with particular institutional hooks or unusually clear fit.

For a balanced list, place both in the reach category and add colleges you would be genuinely happy to attend that have meaningfully more predictable admission odds. The more useful question is which campus and academic culture better match your interests, since demonstrated fit can shape how convincingly your application comes across.
