Is Duke or Boston University better for biology?

I’m trying to compare Duke and Boston University as a possible biology major. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally considered better for undergraduate biology and why.

I want to think about things like research opportunities, department strength, and whether the biology experience feels more supportive or competitive.

Duke has the edge for undergraduate biology. Its biology program is more widely regarded at the national level, and Duke’s strength in biomedical research, medicine, and adjacent sciences creates especially strong opportunities for undergrads who want lab experience, strong advising, and a clear pipeline into research or health-related careers.

One big differentiator is the research ecosystem. Duke’s biology students benefit from the university’s close connection to Duke School of Medicine, Duke Health, and major research institutes, which means there are many labs working in genetics, neuroscience, ecology, evolution, cell biology, and global health.

Another difference is the overall undergraduate experience in the department. Duke tends to offer a more cohesive residential campus and a more traditional undergraduate environment, which often makes it easier to build relationships with professors, find mentors, and feel part of a science community outside class. Boston University absolutely has strong biology and excellent access to hospitals and city-based research, but the experience can feel more decentralized because of the university’s scale and urban layout.

Support versus competition also leans slightly toward Duke for many students. Biology is challenging at both schools, and pre-med culture exists at both, but Duke is often seen as combining high academic intensity with stronger institutional support and tighter-knit advising. BU can be a very good choice, especially if you want an urban setting and broad access to Boston’s medical and biotech world, but on biology alone, Duke is usually the more compelling option.
