Which has better outdoor campus life: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University of Vermont?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and one thing I care about is being able to spend time outside on or near campus. I mean things like walkable green spaces, places to hang out outdoors, and whether the campus atmosphere feels more outdoorsy overall.

I know the schools are in very different settings, so I’m wondering which one tends to offer the better outdoor campus life experience.

For outdoor campus life, the University of Vermont usually has the edge. UVM’s campus sits in Burlington with Lake Champlain nearby, mountain access not far away, and a student culture that leans visibly outdoorsy in everyday life. Illinois has a large, attractive, very walkable campus with lots of open lawn space and quads, but its outdoor feel is more traditional Big Ten college-town than nature-centered.

UVM tends to fit students who want the outdoors to feel woven into the campus atmosphere, not just available nearby. Burlington is easy to walk around, the lakefront is a real asset, and students often spend time outside in ways that go beyond sitting on the grass between classes. If you like the idea of casual access to trails, waterfront views, fall foliage, and a campus culture where being outside is part of people’s routine, UVM is likely to feel stronger.

UIUC makes more sense for someone who wants a lively outdoor campus scene built around student activity, big open spaces, and a classic residential campus layout. The Main Quad and other green areas give students plenty of places to relax, picnic, study outside, or move around on foot or bike. The campus is very functional and social outdoors, but the surrounding landscape is flatter and less scenic, so the atmosphere is less tied to hiking, water, or nearby nature.

If your priority is green space and hanging out outside on campus, both can work. If you want the place itself to feel more outdoorsy overall, UVM stands out more clearly.
