Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Northwestern more selective for undergraduate admissions?

I’m trying to understand how hard each school is to get into, not just the prestige difference. I keep hearing that Northwestern is very selective, but UIUC also seems competitive for certain majors.

I’m mostly looking for a simple comparison of overall undergraduate selectivity between the two schools.

Northwestern is more selective overall for undergraduate admissions. It has a much more restrictive general admissions process across the university, while UIUC’s selectivity varies a lot by college and major. In practice, that means Northwestern is harder to get into for the average applicant, even though some UIUC programs are very competitive.

One important difference is how admissions work across majors. At UIUC, competitiveness can change significantly depending on what you apply for. Engineering, computer science, business, and some other high-demand programs can be especially tough, sometimes feeling much harder than UIUC as a whole. Northwestern, by contrast, is highly selective across the board, so the baseline level of difficulty is higher no matter what area you plan to study.

Another differentiator is the size and structure of the two schools. UIUC enrolls a much larger undergraduate population, which creates more room overall even though certain programs are crowded and selective. Northwestern is a smaller private university with fewer undergraduate spots, and that contributes to a more limited admissions process across the entire institution.

Prestige and selectivity also track differently here. UIUC is excellent and nationally respected, especially in technical fields, but it is not as uniformly difficult to enter at the university-wide level. Northwestern has a stronger reputation for being highly selective in overall undergraduate admissions, so for a simple head-to-head comparison, Northwestern is the harder school to get into overall.
