UChicago vs Penn for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

I’m trying to decide between UChicago and Penn for computer science and I’m having a hard time comparing them beyond the overall school reputation. I’m mostly interested in the undergraduate CS experience, like the strength of the department, internships, and how the major feels academically.

I want to understand which school is generally considered the stronger choice for a CS major and why.

The biggest practical tradeoff is academic style versus preprofessional momentum. UChicago tends to offer a more theory-heavy, intellectually intense CS experience shaped by its Core and a strong math-driven culture, while Penn usually gives undergrads easier access to industry recruiting, applied opportunities, and crossovers with business and engineering.

On the undergraduate CS experience itself, Penn is usually seen as the more straightforward choice for a student who wants a classic undergrad CS path. Its School of Engineering and Applied Science gives CS a more established engineering context, and students often benefit from broader applied coursework, strong student project culture, and convenient access to startups, finance-tech, and big tech recruiting.

UChicago’s CS department has grown a lot and is well respected, but the feel is different. The program is often described as more analytical and less conventionally engineering-centered, with a campus culture that leans deeply academic. That can be a real plus if you like theory, abstraction, and a more intellectual classroom environment.

At UChicago, the Core takes up meaningful space in your schedule and shapes the undergraduate experience in a way many students love, but it does mean less of a purely technical focus early on. At Penn, the path can feel more direct and professionally oriented from the start, especially if you want to combine CS with economics, entrepreneurship, or data-related work.

If the question is which school is more commonly viewed as the stronger undergrad CS choice in practical terms, I would give Penn the edge. UChicago is absolutely credible for CS, especially for a student who wants a more theoretical and academically distinctive education.
