Is Northwestern or Vanderbilt better for social life?

I’m trying to compare Northwestern and Vanderbilt mainly for campus social life, since both seem strong academically. I know the vibe can be really different from school to school, and I want to understand which one is generally more social and easier to find a fun, active friend group at.

I’m not looking at academics here, just the overall student experience outside class.

Vanderbilt has the edge for social life. Its campus culture is widely seen as more outwardly social, the residential setup keeps a lot of students closely connected, and Nashville gives students an easy off-campus scene that actually feels integrated into student life.

One big difference is the day-to-day campus energy. Vanderbilt tends to have a more extroverted, high-participation social culture, with students often describing campus as lively, visible, and easy to plug into quickly. Northwestern absolutely has active student communities, but the vibe is usually a bit more segmented because social life is spread across different circles, interests, and campus subcultures.

Location matters here too, but in a very specific way. Vanderbilt benefits from being in Nashville, where going out, seeing live music, eating off campus, and doing weekend activities can feel like a natural extension of student life. Northwestern is close to Chicago, which is a major advantage, but Evanston itself is quieter and trips into the city are more deliberate rather than something that shapes everyday campus social energy.

Weather and campus rhythm also affect the feel. Vanderbilt’s warmer climate makes outdoor socializing, casual gatherings, and campus events easier for more of the year, while Northwestern’s long winter can make social life feel more indoor and more dependent on existing friend groups or organized activities. At Northwestern, people absolutely find close friends and have fun, but Vanderbilt is more often the school people mean when they say they want a socially active campus that feels easy to step into.
