Is Northwestern or USC better for film studies and networking?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Northwestern and USC for film. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is better for film studies and getting connected to the industry.
I want to choose the school that would give me the best mix of classes, opportunities, and networking for someone interested in film.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: USC places you much closer to the film industry and tends to offer the more direct pipeline into entertainment careers, while Northwestern gives you a broader, more academic and interdisciplinary film experience with strong media opportunities but less day-to-day proximity to Hollywood. USC’s School of Cinematic Arts is one of the most established film schools in the country, and its Los Angeles location matters for internships, guest speakers, and industry access during the school year. Northwestern has a respected Radio/Television/Film program, but it is not built around the same level of constant industry adjacency.
For film studies specifically, the answer depends on whether you mean studying film as an academic subject or preparing for film production and entertainment work. Northwestern is excellent if you want to analyze film seriously, combine it with writing, theater, journalism, or communications, and keep your options flexible. Its quarter system also lets students explore more classes across disciplines, which can be a real advantage if your interests span criticism, screenwriting, media studies, and performance.
For networking, USC has the clearer edge. Being in Los Angeles means alumni, internships, part-time industry work, and student productions are embedded into the local ecosystem in a way few schools can match. The USC alumni network in entertainment is especially valuable, and for students who want early exposure to studios, agencies, production companies, or professional sets, that access is hard to beat.
Northwestern still offers meaningful connections, especially through its strong alumni base, student media culture, and ties to Chicago’s arts scene. But those connections are usually broader across media, communications, and performance rather than as concentrated in film and television production.
