Brown vs Amherst for grad school preparation: which is better for undergrads?

I’m trying to choose between Brown and Amherst and care a lot about long-term grad school prep. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mostly wondering which one would better support a student who wants to build a strong academic record, get research or mentoring opportunities, and be well prepared for graduate applications.

I’m not asking about rankings in general, just which school tends to be better for someone planning ahead for grad school.

For graduate school preparation, both Brown and Amherst can get you there, but they support that goal in different ways. Amherst often stands out for students who want very close faculty mentorship, small classes from the start, and an environment where it is hard to get lost. Brown can be especially appealing for students who want the resources of a research university, broader course options, and access to more labs, departments, and graduate-level academic activity.

Amherst is a strong choice for the student who wants professors to know them well early and often. That matters a lot for grad school because recommendation letters, thesis supervision, and sustained intellectual mentorship can carry real weight. The small liberal arts setting also makes it easier to be in discussion-heavy classes, build a consistent academic identity, and pursue advanced independent work with direct faculty attention.

Brown fits the student who wants to explore widely while still preparing seriously for graduate study. Its open curriculum can be a real advantage if you are self-directed and know how to build a coherent academic path. Brown also offers the infrastructure of a major research university, which can mean more research groups, more specialized upper-level courses, and more chances to engage with graduate-style scholarship while still an undergraduate.

For a student who thrives with structure, personal accountability, and close academic relationships, Amherst may provide the cleaner path to a strong grad school profile. For a student who is proactive, comfortable navigating a larger academic ecosystem, and excited by the scale and flexibility of a university, Brown may offer more room to build a specialized preparation.
