Which has better school spirit, Notre Dame or Michigan State?
I’m trying to get a feel for the student experience at these schools, and school spirit seems like a big part of that. I’ve heard both Notre Dame and Michigan State are known for strong traditions and sports culture, but I’m not sure how they compare in everyday campus life.
For a student, which one actually feels more spirited and unified?

The biggest practical tradeoff is concentrated, tradition-heavy unity at Notre Dame versus a bigger, broader, more public-school kind of energy at Michigan State. Notre Dame’s campus culture is famously tied to football weekends, residence hall identity, and long-standing Catholic and school traditions, so spirit often feels very woven into everyday student life. Michigan State also has huge athletic energy and a very proud student body, but on a much larger campus, that spirit can feel more diffuse day to day even when big events are louder.
For everyday campus unity, Notre Dame probably has the edge. Students there often describe school pride as unusually constant, not just something that turns on for games. The residential hall system matters a lot socially, and traditions like pep rallies, game weekends, and campus rituals tend to create a strong shared identity.
Michigan State absolutely has real school spirit, especially around Big Ten sports, tailgates, and major campus events. The scale can make it feel exciting and high-energy, but also less singular. At a large public university, there are more subcommunities and more ways to experience campus, so not every student feels the same level of collective identity all the time.
A useful way to think about it is intensity versus scale. Notre Dame often feels more unified because so much of student culture points back to the school itself. Michigan State can feel more sprawling and social, with plenty of pride, but not always the same all-campus cohesion.
If the question is strictly which school feels more spirited and unified for the average student, I’d give that to Notre Dame. Michigan State has excellent spirit too, but Notre Dame’s traditions and tighter campus identity usually make that feeling more immediate and consistent.
