How do Notre Dame and UCLA compare in admissions difficulty overall?

I’m trying to figure out how hard it is to get into Notre Dame compared with UCLA.

I know they’re both selective, but I’m mostly looking for a general sense of how their admissions difficulty compares for an average strong applicant.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Notre Dame and UCLA are both highly selective, but they are selective in somewhat different ways: Notre Dame has a smaller private-school applicant pool with a strong emphasis on fit with its mission and community, while UCLA draws a massive public-university applicant pool and can feel harder simply because of the volume and breadth of competition. For a strong applicant, neither is remotely a safety. In broad terms, I would treat both as reach-level schools, with UCLA often feeling especially unpredictable because so many very qualified students apply.

Notre Dame’s process tends to reward applicants who show a clear match with its values, academic seriousness, and campus culture. It is a private Catholic university with a distinct identity, so alignment with the school can matter in a way that feels more visible than at UCLA. Strong grades and rigor are still essential, but the application can be helped by a compelling sense of why Notre Dame specifically makes sense.

UCLA is a large flagship public university, and its admissions landscape is shaped by extraordinary demand across many majors and colleges. It receives applications from a huge number of top students from California, the rest of the U.S., and abroad. That means even applicants with very strong academics can be denied because the bar is so high and the process is less personal in feel.

For an average strong applicant, UCLA is often the one that feels a bit tougher to predict, while Notre Dame can be slightly more navigable if your profile and values line up well with the school. I would not call either meaningfully easier in any broad sense, but if forced to compare overall admissions difficulty, I’d place them in a very similar tier, with UCLA often having the edge in raw competitiveness and Notre Dame being somewhat more applicant-fit driven.
