How does UC Berkeley campus size compare to Brown University campus size?

I’m trying to get a sense of what the day-to-day feel would be like at each school. I’ve heard UC Berkeley is much larger, while Brown feels smaller and more compact.

I’m mainly looking for a simple comparison of campus size and how that affects walking around, getting to classes, and the overall atmosphere.

The biggest day-to-day tradeoff is scale: UC Berkeley feels like a large public university spread across a bigger, busier environment, while Brown feels much more compact and easier to cross on foot. Berkeley’s campus covers a much larger footprint and sits right next to a dense urban area, so walking between classes can take longer and the flow of people tends to feel more constant. Brown’s campus is smaller and more contained on College Hill, which usually makes getting around simpler and gives the school a more intimate feel.

At Berkeley, the main campus is sizable enough that your experience can vary a lot depending on where your classes, housing, and labs are located. Some students have back-to-back classes that require a brisk walk across campus, and the overall atmosphere is energetic, crowded, and very active. The city blends directly into campus life, so it rarely feels isolated.

At Brown, the campus is easier to mentally map. Many academic buildings, dorms, and common student spaces are close together, so the day-to-day rhythm can feel calmer and more personal. Providence is still accessible, but Brown’s campus tends to feel more clearly defined as its own space.

So yes, your impression is basically right: Berkeley is noticeably larger in both physical scale and student presence, and Brown feels smaller, more walkable, and more cohesive.
