UC Berkeley vs Northeastern for finance careers: which one is better for getting into finance?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Northeastern and I want to go into finance after college. Both seem to have strong reputations, but I’m not sure which one gives students a better path into internships and full-time finance jobs.

I’m mostly interested in how employers view each school for finance recruiting and which one has stronger opportunities for breaking into the field.

For finance recruiting, UC Berkeley usually gives you the stronger platform, especially if you can access Haas or build a solid finance resume early. It also benefits from proximity to San Francisco, which matters for internships during the school year and for networking.

Berkeley makes the most sense for the student who wants the broadest long-term finance brand and is comfortable with a more competitive, self-directed environment. Breaking into finance there is very doable, but the path is not handed to you. You often need to join selective finance clubs, network aggressively, and navigate a big campus where opportunities exist but can be unevenly distributed.

Northeastern fits the student who wants a more structured path to work experience and likes the idea of building a resume through co-ops. Its biggest advantage is the co-op system, which can lead to real finance-related experience before senior year and can make you very employable.

Where Northeastern is a bit less powerful is pure prestige in traditional finance recruiting compared with Berkeley. Employers respect Northeastern, but for the most competitive finance pipelines, Berkeley tends to open more doors on school name alone. Northeastern can still work very well if you are proactive and use co-op strategically, especially for students who prefer practical experience over a more theory-and-networking-heavy route.

So if your main question is which school gives you the stronger edge for finance recruiting, Berkeley has the advantage. Northeastern becomes especially appealing if you value built-in work experience and want a more guided way to accumulate relevant internships before graduating.
