Carnegie Mellon vs Johns Hopkins for undergraduate research opportunities

Johns Hopkins has the edge for undergraduate research, especially if you want a campus where research is central to the school’s identity and where faculty labs are a major part of student life from early on. Hopkins is deeply built around discovery in medicine, public health, biology, neuroscience, engineering, and related fields, and undergraduates regularly plug into that ecosystem through campus labs, the medical campus, and affiliated institutes. The school also has a long-established culture of faculty-led research that tends to be very visible to undergrads.

One concrete difference is scale and concentration of research activity. Hopkins is unusually research-intensive across the life sciences and health-related areas, and that creates a lot of lab volume for undergrads to tap into. If your interests overlap with biomedical engineering, public health, neuroscience, molecular biology, or medical research, the density of opportunities is hard to beat, and students often start by emailing PIs, joining labs through classes, or connecting through department networks relatively early.

Mentorship structure is another reason Hopkins stands out. Because undergraduate research is such a normal part of the academic culture there, it is common for students to work closely with grad students, postdocs, and faculty in a way that can lead to meaningful responsibility over time rather than just routine support tasks.

Carnegie Mellon is also excellent, but its strongest research advantage is more concentrated in computer science, robotics, AI, engineering, human-computer interaction, and certain quantitative fields. If that is your lane, CMU can be exceptional because undergrads are surrounded by cutting-edge technical work and often contribute in serious ways. The tradeoff is that the experience can feel more department-dependent, whereas at Hopkins the research culture is more broadly woven into the whole university.
