Is Duke or Harvard better for pre-law?

I’m trying to figure out which school makes more sense for someone who wants to go to law school later. I know there isn’t a formal pre-law major, but I keep seeing Duke and Harvard recommended for different reasons.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally better for preparing for law school and building a strong pre-law path.

Harvard has the edge for pre-law. Its advising ecosystem, sheer breadth of humanities and social science offerings, and proximity to one of the most visible legal and policy networks in the country make it especially strong for students aiming at law school. Harvard also benefits from a huge alumni base in law, government, public policy, and academia, which can matter when you are looking for mentorship, internships, and recommendation-building opportunities.

One concrete differentiator is academic range. For pre-law, what helps most is excelling in reading-heavy, writing-intensive courses, and Harvard offers exceptional depth across government, history, philosophy, economics, sociology, and related fields. That gives you a lot of ways to build the analytical writing and discussion-based skills that law schools value without being boxed into a narrow track.

Another difference is access to legal and policy exposure during college. Both schools can get you to strong outcomes, but Harvard’s location near courts, nonprofits, research centers, and public interest organizations around Cambridge and Boston creates a dense set of opportunities during the school year. That can make it easier to find term-time internships, legal-adjacent research, and public service work that strengthens a future law school application.

Duke is still excellent, especially if you want a more contained campus culture and strong advising in a highly resourced environment. Its undergraduate experience is often described as more cohesive and more community-centered than Harvard’s, and some students thrive in that setup. But if the question is which school is more advantageous specifically for building a pre-law path, Harvard’s academic breadth, alumni reach, and surrounding legal ecosystem give it more upside.
