Which is more prestigious for engineering: UIUC or UT Austin?

I’m trying to compare University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and UT Austin for engineering and keep seeing both names come up a lot. I know they’re both strong schools, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally viewed as more prestigious for engineering.

I’m asking because I want to know how each school is perceived by employers and in the engineering field overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that both schools are very respected in engineering, but UIUC tends to carry a slightly stronger national reputation across engineering as a whole, while UT Austin has enormous weight of its own, especially through its scale, research presence, and ties to major Texas employers. In engineering circles, neither name needs explanation. Both send graduates to top companies and both are seen as flagship public engineering schools.

If the question is strictly prestige in engineering, UIUC usually has a small edge in overall perception. That is especially true in fields like computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil, mechanical, and computer science-related areas, where Illinois has long had a very established reputation.

UT Austin is not far behind, and in some settings the gap is so small that it is basically irrelevant. UT has outstanding engineering, very strong recruiting, and a brand that is exceptionally powerful in Texas and the broader South. For students aiming at Texas industries such as energy, semiconductors, infrastructure, or Austin tech, UT can feel just as prestigious in practice because of proximity and alumni reach.

So if you are asking for the cleaner prestige answer, I would give UIUC a narrow lead for engineering overall. If you are asking whether that difference meaningfully changes employer outcomes, usually not by much. In real hiring, your internships, projects, major, grades, and location preferences will matter more than the slight reputation gap between two schools that are both already elite in engineering.
