Which is better for a liberal arts feel: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Wesleyan University?

I’m trying to compare these two schools because I want a college that feels more like a liberal arts environment, with close interaction with professors and a strong sense of community. UIUC is much bigger, while Wesleyan seems more traditional in that way.

I’m not just looking at academics, but at the overall campus atmosphere and whether one of them would feel more personal and discussion-based as an undergraduate.

Wesleyan University is much closer to the liberal arts experience you’re describing. Its undergraduate focus, small class environment, and campus culture are built around discussion-heavy learning and close faculty interaction in a way UIUC, as a large public research university, typically is not.

One major difference is scale. Wesleyan is a small residential university where undergraduates make up the core of the campus, so classes and student life tend to feel more intimate and interconnected. At UIUC, the size of the student body, the number of large introductory courses, and the overall pace of a major research university can make the experience feel less personal, especially early on.

Another differentiator is classroom style. Wesleyan is known for seminar-style courses, interdisciplinary exploration, and a culture where students are expected to speak up, debate, and build close relationships with professors. UIUC absolutely has excellent faculty and plenty of smaller upper-level classes, but the day-to-day academic feel is more likely to include big lectures, especially in popular departments.

The community dynamic also points toward Wesleyan. Its residential campus and strong emphasis on undergraduate life usually create a tighter social and intellectual community, where it is easier to recognize people across classes, clubs, and campus spaces. UIUC offers far more scale, school spirit, and breadth of opportunities, but that same breadth can make the atmosphere feel more diffuse than a classic liberal arts setting.
