Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Wake Forest better for a finance career?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and I’m interested in finance after college. I know both have good reputations, but I’m not sure which one would give me a stronger path into internships, recruiting, and jobs in finance.

I’m mainly looking at overall career outcomes and how well each school is viewed for finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and recruiting style: UIUC gives you a much larger business ecosystem with a very well-known undergraduate business school, while Wake Forest offers a smaller, more personal environment with strong advising and an alumni network that can be especially helpful in relationship-driven recruiting. For finance specifically, UIUC tends to have broader name recognition in business and a deeper bench of student organizations, employer touchpoints, and classmates headed into finance roles. Wake can still place well, especially for students who network aggressively, but the pipeline is usually more dependent on individual initiative and alumni connections.

UIUC’s Gies College of Business is a real advantage here. Recruiters already know the school, there is a large finance student community, and the campus size creates more volume in clubs, competitions, and employer events tied to business careers. That matters for internships because finance recruiting often rewards repetition: more info sessions, more peers preparing for interviews, and more chances to meet firms on campus.

Wake Forest has a strong reputation overall and a polished undergraduate experience, and some students do very well there in finance. Its smaller size can mean closer faculty access and potentially stronger mentoring, which helps if you are the kind of student who will take full advantage of office hours, alumni outreach, and career center relationships.

If your priority is the strongest overall platform for finance recruiting, internships, and employer recognition, I would lean UIUC. Wake Forest is still a credible route, especially if you value a smaller campus and more individualized support, but UIUC is more likely to give you the wider and more established finance runway.
