Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UC Davis better for pre-vet preparation?
I’m a high school student trying to decide between these two schools for undergrad, and veterinary school is my main goal.
I know both have strong science programs, but I’m trying to figure out which one is generally better for pre-vet preparation in terms of classes, advising, and opportunities for veterinary experience.

UC Davis has the edge for pre-vet preparation. The biggest reason is proximity to one of the country’s best-known veterinary schools and teaching hospitals, which creates unusually direct access to animal-related coursework, advising, research, and clinical exposure. For a student whose main goal is vet school, that built-in ecosystem matters a lot.
UC Davis is especially strong because its animal science and pre-veterinary environment is deeply woven into the university. Students can take classes that connect closely to animal biology, nutrition, reproduction, and management, and the campus culture includes many peers aiming at veterinary medicine. That often makes it easier to find relevant clubs, mentors, and faculty who understand the vet school path in detail.
The experience side also favors Davis. Being next to a major veterinary medical center can make shadowing, hospital volunteering, lab work, and connections to large-animal and small-animal settings more accessible than at most universities. Even when opportunities are competitive, the sheer concentration of animal-focused resources is a major advantage for building a veterinary school resume.
UIUC is still a very solid option, especially because it also has a respected College of Veterinary Medicine and strong science departments. You would be able to complete the prerequisite courses and find research or animal experience there too. But for pre-vet preparation specifically, Davis tends to offer a denser, more specialized pipeline from undergraduate study into veterinary-oriented opportunities.
