University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs UCLA for political science: which is better for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and UCLA for political science and I’m having trouble comparing them in a way that matters for undergrad. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m more interested in which one might be the better fit for a political science major in terms of academic experience and opportunities.

I’m a high school senior trying to make my final choice, and I want to understand how students compare these two specifically for poli sci.

For political science specifically, UCLA usually has the edge if you want a department with especially strong visibility, easy proximity to government, media, advocacy, and policy organizations, and a campus culture where a lot of students are plugged into public affairs. UIUC is still a very solid choice, especially for someone who wants a large public research university with strong academics, a more traditional college-town environment, and potentially a more grounded, less externally competitive day-to-day experience.

UCLA tends to fit students who want political science to feel connected to a major metro area. Los Angeles gives you access to internships with local government, legal organizations, campaigns, nonprofits, and issue-based groups during the school year, which matters a lot in a field where experience outside class can shape your path. UCLA also benefits from broad name recognition and a politically engaged student culture, which can be useful if you may later pursue law school, public policy, journalism, or advocacy.

UIUC fits students who care more about the on-campus academic experience than about being in a huge city. Its political science program is respected, and because Illinois is a major research university, there are real opportunities in faculty research, honors work, and interdisciplinary study. If you like the idea of building close routines, joining campus organizations without dealing with LA logistics, and focusing on coursework in a classic Big Ten setting, UIUC can be more comfortable and easier to navigate.

One practical difference is how your opportunities may unfold. At UCLA, the surrounding location can create momentum for internships and networking earlier, but it can also mean more competition and a faster pace. At UIUC, you may need to be more intentional about seeking policy-related experience off campus or during summers, but some students prefer that because it keeps the academic environment less distracting.

If cost is meaningfully lower at one school, that should weigh heavily, especially for political science, where graduate or law school is common. Between the two on academics alone, I would lean UCLA for the broader undergrad political science ecosystem, but UIUC is a very credible pick for someone who wants strong academics in a more self-contained college environment.
