University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign vs NYU for marketing: which is better for career outcomes?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UIUC and NYU for marketing. Both schools seem strong, but I’m mainly thinking about internships, recruiting, and getting a solid first job after graduation.

I’m not sure which one has the stronger reputation or alumni network specifically for marketing, so I’m trying to understand which school usually gives students a better path into the field.

For marketing career outcomes, NYU usually has the edge if you want to be plugged directly into media, advertising, branding, fashion, entertainment, or digital marketing while you are still in school. Its New York location matters a lot because students can intern during the semester, attend industry events regularly, and build contacts at agencies and brands without needing to wait for summer. For a student who wants the fastest access to major marketing hubs and is comfortable being proactive in a very large city, NYU tends to open more doors earlier.

That said, UIUC can be an excellent launch point for a student who wants strong recruiting, a big alumni base, and a more traditional campus experience at a lower cost. Gies has a very solid reputation in business, and UIUC sends graduates into major companies across consumer goods, tech, consulting, and corporate marketing roles. If you are interested in brand management, market research, analytics-heavy marketing, or rotational business programs, UIUC often places students well, especially when they take advantage of career fairs and alumni networking.

If cost is anywhere close to similar and your goals lean toward agency work, luxury, fashion, media, entertainment, or social and digital marketing, NYU is probably the more powerful platform. If UIUC is meaningfully less expensive and you are targeting mainstream corporate marketing roles, business leadership programs, or marketing with a stronger analytics/business angle, UIUC can deliver excellent outcomes with less financial pressure.
