How does Georgia Tech's reputation compare to UC Berkeley's for engineering and STEM jobs?

I’m trying to understand how employers and grad schools usually view these two schools, especially for engineering and other STEM fields. Both seem really strong, but people give them very different reputations depending on the major and region.

I want to know how they compare in terms of overall name recognition and academic respect, not just rankings.

For engineering and STEM, both Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley are viewed as top-tier schools, and neither will be seen as a weak option by employers or grad programs. UC Berkeley usually carries broader overall name recognition, especially internationally and outside engineering, while Georgia Tech has an especially strong reputation with engineering employers and in applied technical recruiting. In many engineering circles, Tech is treated as every bit as serious and respected as Berkeley.

A student who wants the widest all-around academic brand, including strong prestige across science, math, computing, and research-heavy fields, will often find Berkeley’s name travels farther. Berkeley tends to have more instant recognition among people who are not specifically in engineering, and grad schools are very familiar with its research output, faculty reputation, and long history in STEM. That can matter a bit more if you may branch into academia, highly theoretical work, or fields where the university’s broader global profile carries weight.

A student focused on engineering practice, industry connections, and being taken very seriously by technical employers will find Georgia Tech exceptionally well regarded. Tech has a reputation for rigor, strong co-op and internship pipelines, and producing engineers who are ready for demanding technical work. In sectors like mechanical, aerospace, industrial, civil, electrical, and computer engineering, employers often view Georgia Tech as a major feeder school rather than a lesser-known alternative.

Region does affect perception. Berkeley’s name is especially powerful on the West Coast and has strong international visibility, while Georgia Tech is extremely prominent across the South, East Coast, and with many national engineering recruiters. But for major STEM employers, both are national brands.

For grad school, your research, grades, recommendations, and coursework will matter more than choosing between these two names. Between them, Berkeley may have a slight edge in broad academic prestige, while Georgia Tech is often just as formidable, and sometimes more directly associated with engineering strength, in employer perception.
