Virginia Tech vs Penn State for marketing: which is better for an undergraduate business major?

I’m trying to decide between Virginia Tech and Penn State and want to study marketing or a business-related major. Both schools seem strong overall, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one gives a better undergraduate experience specifically for marketing.

I’m mostly looking at things like the strength of the business program, recruiting opportunities, and how well the major prepares students for internships and jobs after graduation.

Penn State has the edge for undergraduate marketing.

One concrete difference is the business school structure. At Penn State, Smeal is a dedicated, large-scale business college with a strong undergraduate identity, and marketing sits inside a system built around career fairs, corporate partnerships, student organizations, and alumni pipelines specifically for business students. Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business is respected, but Virginia Tech is often more identified with engineering, tech, and analytics-oriented strengths than with being a first-call destination for undergraduate marketing.

Recruiting is another important separator. Penn State’s alumni network in business is enormous, and that matters a lot for marketing because many first jobs come through brand management, sales, market research, retail, consulting, and corporate rotational programs where alumni referrals and employer familiarity help.

For preparation, both schools can get you to good internships and jobs, but Penn State usually offers a more direct runway if you know you want classic undergraduate business recruiting. Virginia Tech can be especially appealing if you want marketing with a stronger tie to tech, data, entrepreneurship, or a campus culture that is less business-dominant and more interdisciplinary. But for marketing specifically, Penn State is the clearer pick.
