What is the campus culture like at UPenn vs. Tufts?

I'm trying to get a feel for the social atmosphere at both schools because I know they have pretty different reputations. I care a lot about whether students are collaborative or more competitive, and what day-to-day life actually feels like on campus.

I'm a junior starting to think seriously about where I'd feel most comfortable, so I'm mostly looking for the overall vibe rather than academics.

Tufts tends to feel warmer, quirkier, and a bit less status-conscious day to day, while Penn usually has a faster, more pre-professional social atmosphere. At Tufts, students are often described as collaborative, politically engaged, and openly intellectual in an unpolished way. At Penn, students can absolutely be supportive, but the campus reputation is more ambitious and outwardly driven, with a stronger focus on internships, clubs, and career momentum.

One major difference is the social energy around achievement. Penn has a noticeable culture of hustle, partly because of its location in Philadelphia and the prominence of business, finance, consulting, and other career-oriented paths. That can make campus feel exciting and high-energy, but also more intense and sometimes more comparative. Students often juggle a lot, and the pace of conversation can lean toward what people are building, joining, or applying for.

Tufts usually comes across as more relaxed interpersonally, even though students are still very accomplished. The vibe is often more artsy, civically minded, and a little offbeat, with less pressure to package yourself in a polished way. Socially, it tends to feel less dominated by one scene, and many students find it easier to be openly earnest or unconventional there.

The physical and social setting also matters. Penn is embedded in a city campus, so day-to-day life has more of an urban rhythm and can feel busier and more outward-facing. Tufts has a more contained residential feel in the Medford/Somerville area, which often creates a tighter campus bubble and a stronger sense that student life is centered on the campus itself.

On collaboration versus competition, neither school is cutthroat in the caricatured sense, but Tufts more consistently gets described as cooperative and approachable. Penn is collaborative too, especially within friend groups and classes, yet the broader atmosphere can feel more competitive simply because so many students are intensely goal-oriented at the same time.
