Which is better for social life, UChicago or Dartmouth?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and keep hearing very different things about campus culture. I know both are academically intense, but I want to understand which one is generally more social and easier to find a fun, active community in.

I’m mainly comparing the overall vibe, not just parties or clubs.

Dartmouth is usually seen as the more overtly social campus. Its smaller, more residential setting, strong tradition of weekend activity centered on campus, and tight-knit house and Greek scene make it easier for many students to feel like there is a shared social rhythm. UChicago absolutely has community and fun, but the vibe is more self-directed, more varied across friend groups, and less built around one dominant campus-wide social culture.

Dartmouth tends to suit someone who wants social life to feel visible and easy to plug into. A lot of students live deeply in the campus bubble, and because Hanover is small, people often spend their time with each other rather than dispersing into a city. That can create a strong sense that something is always happening, whether that means organized events, informal gatherings, traditions, or larger weekend plans.

UChicago fits someone who likes building a social life through smaller communities and specific interests. House culture, student organizations, and close friend circles matter a lot there, and many students really do find their people. But the energy is usually less uniformly outgoing than at Dartmouth, and the school has a more intellectual, quirky, sometimes independent culture that can feel amazing if that matches your personality and a little harder if you want an immediately high-energy scene.

If by social you mean warm, communal, and consistently active in a very campus-centered way, Dartmouth has the edge. If you mean finding smart, interesting people and creating your own version of a social life through conversations, niche communities, and the city around you, UChicago can be great, but it is not typically the one people describe as the more naturally social of the two.
