NYU or Duke for finance: which is the better choice for undergrads?

I’m trying to decide between NYU and Duke for college, and I’m most interested in studying finance and eventually working in the field. I know both schools have strong reputations, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally the better choice for an undergrad who wants finance opportunities and recruiting access.

I want to compare them based on the overall fit for a student focused on finance.

NYU is the better pick for most undergrads who are specifically focused on finance. Stern is one of the most direct pipelines into investment banking, asset management, and other finance roles, and being in New York gives students unusually easy access to internships during the school year, networking events, alumni panels, and coffee chats with firms nearby.

The biggest advantage is location plus structure. At NYU Stern, finance is deeply built into the undergraduate experience through coursework, clubs, recruiting culture, and employer presence. Students can often combine classes with part-time in-semester internships or frequent trips to employer events in Manhattan, which is much harder to replicate from Durham.

Recruiting access also tends to be more concentrated and visible at NYU for finance. Employers know Stern extremely well, and the school has a long-established identity tied to business and Wall Street. Duke places very well too, especially into high-level finance roles, but it does so from a broader, less finance-centered undergraduate environment.

Duke’s edge is that it offers a more traditional residential campus, a stronger all-around college experience for many students, and excellent outcomes across consulting, finance, tech, and pre-professional paths.

One practical nuance is that NYU makes the most sense if you are excited by a pre-professional atmosphere and the pace of New York. Students who want a classic campus community often feel Duke is more cohesive socially. But on the finance question alone, NYU has the cleaner undergraduate setup and more built-in proximity to the industry.
